September is a lovely month. The sun is shining and there is a feel of autumn in the air promising the colours and scents that go with this beautiful season.

As things start to slow down in the garden you can reflect and prepare for the year ahead. What did you like from this year? What didn’t you like? What worked and what didn’t work? What would you like to change or add to your garden next year? Now is a good time to reflect on all these questions and plan what you’d like to do and see in the garden.

The excitement for the new gardening year starts with the planting of winter and spring bulbs and this is just one of the September gardening jobs you can be getting on with this month. Other September gardening jobs you can be doing this month are:

  1. Plant perennials. September is a good time for planting. The soil is still warm with plenty of time left for the plants to develop their roots before the cold Winter weather arrives.

  1. Start planting Winter and Spring flowering bulbs in pots and borders such as daffodils, snowdrops and Crocus.
